GALLERY: Maserati MC12 – this RM10m car lives in PJ

At yesterday’s launch of the Maserati Levante Vulcano, there was another car wearing the trident badge that was simply unmissable, if not outright stealing the thunder. The Maserati MC12 is the greatest modern day car wearing the famous badge, and it’s very rare with only 50 units ever made.

One of those has permanent residence at Naza Italia’s Petaling Jaya showroom, and while we’ve featured it before six years ago, each sighting is a treat, so here’s another round of drooling. This time, the handlers brought out the MC12 – in its signature white-navy blue livery – for some fresh air and Vitamin D.

The road-going MC12 was created to homologate a racing variant that went on to compete (and win) in the FIA GT Championship, marking Maserati’s return to racing after a long absence of 37 years. That explains the MC12’s race car appearance, although Maserati used the fighter jet-bodied Enzo Ferrari as foundation. The Enzo’s a legend, but this Frank Stephenson-penned body is way sexier, and the MC12 proved its credentials with race victories. The Maser’s removable hardtop is a bonus.

The MC12’s rear-mid mounted engine is a 6.0 litre V12 related to the Enzo’s heart. It makes 630 PS and 652 Nm of torque, chanelled to the rear wheels via a six-speed semi-auto Cambiocorsa gearbox with steering shift paddles. The 0-100 km/h sprint is despatched in 3.8 seconds while top speed is 330 km/h.

Now a prized collectible, the Maserati MC12 was pre-sold for 600,000 euros (RM2.78 million) each from 2004-2005. How much is it worth now?

One pristine unit (31/50, 770 km from new, same signature colour) was sold by RM Sotheby’s for US$2,090,000 (RM8.55 million). Last year, the same auctioneer moved one on for 2,001,875 euros (RM9.27 million). The latter – also in white – was “driven regularly” and had 12,500 km on the clock. Prices are rising and Naza’s unit might well be worth RM10 million in a couple of years. Contact AUTOart for more affordable options.
