SPYSHOTS: 2020 MINI JCW GP on the road and circuit

Following its initial public sighting in February, the MINI John Cooper Works GP has now been spotted undergoing road and circuit testing ahead of its debut by 2020. Here, we also get to have a look into the MINI JCW GP, where the driver’s instrument binnacle is now occupied by what appears to be a flat digital display in place of traditional dials.

The interior example seen here shows a familiar gearlever for an automatic transmission, which looks almost identical to those in recent MINI models. Beyond that, the changes to the interior are fairly mild in comparison to the makeover applied to the JCW GP’s exterior bodywork, which is heavily influenced by the similarly-named concept introduced in September 2017

Where the current R56-generation JCW produces 231 hp and 320 Nm of torque, the JCW GP spotted here will build further upon that, likely producing over 300 hp in this limited run, 3,000-unit guise. Following current JCW tradition, a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission will be offered for speed and efficiency.

The added muscle from the engine in the forthcoming JCW GP is likely to be matched with a set of bigger brakes and revised suspension as part of the GP package, in order to better harness the JCW GP’s newfound performance. Weight loss is part of the programme as well, and the JCW GP is expected to lose the standard car’s rear seats, while lightweight materials can be expected to feature here as well.
