Bugatti: An SUV Would Not Do Justice to the Brand

Bugatti is celebrating it 110th anniversary this year, so naturally, it has some big plans for 2019.

Those plans will include the presentation of new models, Bugatti president Stephen Winkelmann confirmed in the automaker’s recent 2019 year in review letter, which is hardly surprising. What is a bit surprising, though, is that an SUV won’t be among these new Bugatti models.

“Although speculation is rife and the time appears to be appropriate, there will be no SUV from Bugatti,” Winkelmann said.

Bugatti is looking at introducing a new model in order to boost sales and diversify its customer base. Winkelmann indicated the brand was ready to add a second model to its lineup last year, but with an SUV now crossed off the list of possibilities, it’s unclear what this second model could be.

The automaker introduced the Chiron-based Divo last year, which is a more handling-focused model than the Chiron or the Veyron. That model was based on the Chiron and production is limited to just 40 units, however.

Rumors have been circulating for years that Bugatti will put a four-door sedan into production. These rumors have been mainly fuelled by the introduction of the Bugatti Galibier concept in 2009, which was a four-door sedan with the automaker’s 8.0-liter quad-turbo W16 engine sitting up front.

Whatever Bugatti’s plans are for its rumored second model, we’re just glad it’s not another SUV. With just about every supercar maker in the world trying to capitalize on the demand for crossovers and SUVs, it’s refreshing to see a brand go against the grain. We’re having trouble grasping the fact that an SUV is considered too sacrilege for Bugatti and not for Ferrari or Aston Martin, though.
