New Audi RS Q3 Sportback caught on camera

A camouflaged mule for Audi’s upcoming compact SUV has been caught on camera, fitted with a range of RS upgrades

Audi’s range of niche-busting SUVs will continue to expand with the introduction of this, the new RS Q3 Sportback. The model will sit at the top of the Q3 Sportback lineup and create a new segment for performance-based, compact coupe-SUVs.

The RS treatment is immediately obvious in the spy images; the more aggressive body kit, a lower ride height, wider track,  rear wing and trademark RS oval tailpipes can all be picked out. Under the skin the SUV is expected to use Audi’s famed 395bhp turbocharged 2.5-litre engine.

The idea for Audi’s baby coupe-inspired SUV was floated at the 2014 Beijing Motor Show with the reveal of the TT Offroad Concept. Our latest spy-shots indicate that the design of the production model will be far simpler than the show car, being a coupe-shaped variant of the latest Q3 rather than a jumped-up version of the TT Coupe.

Audi’s new Q3 Sportback will sit on the same MQB platform as the standard Q3, borrowing its range of engines. As such, base-models will likely use the VW Group’s new 1.5-litre TSI petrol unit, with power outputs of either 128bhp or 148bhp. Two 2.0-litre TDI diesels will also feature, with either 148bhp or 187bhp.

Lower-powered 1.5-litre models will probably be delivered with a six-speed manual, whilst the range-topping cars will be fitted with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. In addition, the MQB platform offers support for plug-in hybrid powertrains but, as the newest Q3 doesn’t currently offer a PHEV variant, it’s unlikely that this new model will from launch.

Inside, the new Q3 Sportback will feature Audi’s latest 9.2-inch infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. This RS model will also likely include bucket seats, a sports steering wheel and a range of RS badging.

We’re anticipating a comprehensive list of equipment, too, with LED headlights, active lane assist, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring, and a power-operated tailgate all appearing as standard features.

As these spy-shots seem to show a production-ready model, we expect Audi’s new Q3 Sportback will be unveiled in the second half of this year, which means a potential debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
