New Golf MK8 Filmed Casually Driving in South Africa

A mysterious Volkswagen model, believed to be the next-generation Golf MK8, has been filmed driving in South Africa completely uncovered.

While it’s impossible to confirm that this is indeed the MK8 Golf, the vehicle shown in the two videos below is clearly a Golf-sized, VW-branded vehicle.

Assuming this is the new Golf, it looks as though it will take after the new 2109 VW Polo, featuring a near identical front clip and styling that is rounder and altogether more soft.

The vehicle in the video also looks to have LED headlights and wheels similar to the MK7 Golf GTI’s so-called ‘Austin’ wheels.

The MK8 Golf, expected to arrive for the 2020 model year, is expected to feature a slightly larger footprint than the current car. That means you can expect more space for front and rear seat passengers and a larger rear cargo area as well.

As for powertrains, the 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder introduced to the Golf for 2019 should carry over. Some versions will feature a 48V mild hybrid generator, it’s understood – a system that will help the next Golf GTI make up to 260 hp. Plug-in hybrid versions are expected to arrive eventually as well.

VW sent out a teaser sketch for the new Golf this week, showing off the hatchback’s silhouette and some basic body lines.

Sales of the Golf are down nearly 40% in the US this year, so the automaker will need the next-generation model to be a hit with regards to both styling and driving dynamics.
