Rumour: Rebadged Baleno to be called Toyota Glanza

According to a media report, Toyota’s version of the Baleno hatchback will be called Glanza. The car is expected to be launched around June 2019.

Reports suggest that the production of the Glanza is already underway at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. Later, it would be shifted to Toyota’s Bidadi plant in Karnataka, once the carmaker has the required component supplier base in place. This would allow Toyota to utilize the capacity of its factory, while also freeing up production capacity at Suzuki’s Gujarat plant. First dispatches are expected to start from April 26, 2019.

The Toyota Glanza is expected to be offered in Alpha and Zeta trims with one petrol engine option. It could be powered by the same BS-VI compliant 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine that powers the Baleno. This engine produces 83 BHP and 115 Nm of torque and is offered with either a 5-speed manual or CVT. Whether Toyota will offer the recently introduced 1.2-litre DualJet Smart Hybrid on the Glanza remains to be seen.

The Toyota Glanza will compete with the Maruti Baleno, Hyundai i20 and the Honda Jazz in the Indian market.
