Super Bowl LIII automaker ad roundup

The Super Bowl always comes through with splashy, star-filled ads for food, drinks, movies and especially cars. Thankfully, now we usually get sneak peeks before the big Sunday, and we have a selection here for you to check out and rate before the Los Angeles Rams take on the known cheaters from New England (Copy chief and former college classmate of Tom Brady's note: How dare you!?).

Hyundai — The Elevator

Hyundai picked up the lovable Jason Bateman for its new commercial touting the benefits of shopping with Hyundai Shopper Assurance. Its hook is transparent pricing, streamlined purchasing and a three-day, worry-free exchange. The crux is that car shopping is normally on par with a root canal and other dreadful things, but the happy couple gets to skip all of that, because they're buying a Hyundai.

OK, let's see more.

Audi is showing off its all-electric e-tron GT concept, due to hit showrooms in 2020. The hook is that the guy sees his grampa, who's presumably no longer with us, and gains access to a hyperfuturistic electron-filled garage. The GT concept is for him, according to gramps. Shortly thereafter, the name of the commercial begins to make sense.

Mercedes-Benz picks up rapper Ludacris for its SB spot featuring its new, and much-maligned (by us), "Hey, Mercedes" function. The protagonist first calls a golf putt and then continues to talk to the world around him, changing lights and blowing parking tickets away. Those who are pro Siri or Alexa will probably like this function. If not, you won't. The commercial is pretty good, though.

Ram is using The Avenger's Hawkeye, better known as Jeremy Renner, to align with the women's movement in this ad titled, "Make Sure of It." The point here is that we (and Ram) make sure that every generation is better than the one before it. A noble goal for sure, brought home by the fact that the Ram pickup has improved immensely in its newest generation.

"She won't be a female leader, she'll be a leader."

Jeep continues its string of patriotic Super Bowl ads with this one called "More Than Just Words" with One Republic's take on the "Star-Spangled Banner." All of you cynics can suck it, this one does invoke some feelings of pride. And there isn't much that's more patriotic than a Jeep; it literally helped us win the war (you know, the big, big one).

Jeep's second ad announces the Gladiator pickup return. It's a good commercial, but the scuttlebutt here is that the company crushed a real, classic Gladiator to make it. You Jeep guys are not happy about that.

Toyota's Super Bowl spot will appear toward the end of the second quarter and features the new, tougher-looking 2019 RAV4 hybrid. To do this, it leans on sportscaster Jim Nantz and 22-year-old Detroit native Toni Harris, the first female football player to play a nonspecialist position. She's now a sophomore defensive back at East Los Angeles College and has received four scholarship offers from universities to play (men's) football. The link is that new Toyota RAV4 is better and stronger than the outgoing model. But is it tougher than a girl playing football with the boys?

I've included this Nissan commercial from 2015 because it's my favorite ad in a Super Bowl ever. Love the car, love the song, love the sentiment.

This Super Bowl ad isn't directly car related, but it is "Fast & Furious" related. Plus, it features the three coolest guys on the planet: Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham and Idris Elba.
