A Volkswagen Golf MK8 prototype has been caught completely undisguised while the driver was grabbing a bite to eat at McDonald’s.
Instagram user Johannes.vag posted a photo of the Golf MK8 to his page over the weekend, although the photo was allegedly not taken by him. It shows a black Golf MK8 with no camouflage on it whatsoever, giving us a good look at its rather dejected-looking front fascia, sportier side profile, and narrow rear window. It looks like a larger version of the Polo MK6, in our opinion, which was to be expected.
Customers can expect this new Golf to be a bit more spacious inside thanks to a wider and longer MQB-derived platform. VW is also expected to employ both 12V and 48V mild hybrid versions of the hatch, which will likely pair a small displacement four-cylinder with the electrification systems. The Golf GTI MK8 will also tap this mild hybrid system, pairing it with a more powerful turbocharged four-cylinder to make more than 250 hp, allegedly.

VW is also planning on leading the semi-autonomous and connected vehicle charge for the compact segment with the Golf MK8. The hatch is expected to feature connected services such as live fuel price displays and self-updating 3D mapping, along with a suite of semi-autonomous features. In a statement last year, VW said the Golf MK8 will take it “into the era of fully connected vehicles with extended autonomous driving functions.” It also said the hatch will “have more software on board than ever before. It will always be online and its digital cockpit and assistance systems will be the benchmark in terms of connectivity and safety.”
The VW Golf MK8 is expected to enter production this fall. Sales should commence in North America sometime in 2020.
