Lexus LC 500h 'Matte Prototype' debuts in Barcelona

Lexus has unveiled the LC 500h ‘Matte Prototype’ at the 2019 Barcelona Motor Show. The prototype was created to exemplify the automaker’s efforts to keep innovating, this time using special colours with original textures. This follows the striking Inspiration Concept that was shown in August last year.

The Matte Prototype is finished in a shade called Space Orange, which is inspired by the orange tones that can be seen when looking towards the sun during sunsets. As implied by the name, the paint has a matte finish, and the look is further enhanced with a set of 21-inch semi-matte black wheels, carbon-fibre roof and active rear spoiler.

Of course, the orange theme continues inside the cabin, where it’s used to provide a contrasting element on the instrument panel, the steering wheel and the door inserts.

Mechanically, nothing has changed – the LC 500h is powered by Lexus’ advanced self-charging multi-stage hybrid system, allowing the coupe to recharge while driving without requiring any cables or plugs. It combines an electric motor and an 84-cell, 311-volt lithium-ion battery, the latter a first for Lexus.

Unlike the LC 500, which draws power from a naturally-aspirated 5.0 litre V8, the LC 500h makes use of a direct injection 3.5 litre V6 with Dual VVT-i. An advanced four-speed automatic transmission replaces the reduction gear (typically used to amplify the engine’s output in a regular hybrid car) and simulates the feel of a 10-speed gearbox – the eCVT has three virtual ratios, multiplied to nine through the auto’s first three ratios; the final, fourth gear is the 10th virtual ratio.

This enables engine speed to rise in a linear and direct manner under acceleration, eliminating the typical CVT “rubber band” effect. There are paddle shifters too, if you want to take control. Find out what we think of the LC 500 in our video review, below.
