Fernando Alonso to test drive the McLaren MCL34?

Fernando Alonso may have retired from F1, however, he could be back in a McLaren in the coming weeks with reports claiming he could test the MCL34.

McLaren’s new challenger will be in action at the Circuit de Catalunya on February 18 as pre-season testing gets underway in Spain.

And while Carlos Sainz and Lando Norris are expected to do the bulk of the running, they could – briefly – be joined by former driver Alonso.

According to thejudge13.com, rumours from Spain claim the Spaniard could spend half a day in the new car to give McLaren feedback by comparing it to last year’s machine.

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown is hoping the team, who were P6 last year, put in an improved performance this year.

“We’re anticipating a good car,” he recently said.

“The off season development has gone according to plan but you ultimately don’t know what the competition has been up to and the competition is tough and is getting tougher.

“We need good feedback from them [Sainz & Norris] – this will be a much different car to 2018. Their feedback is excellent.

“We want them to race the field hard. Naturally team-mates race each other hard but they do get on and are good guys and for us to move forward as a team we need them both bringing back the cars and the points. They know that. That’s the team goal.”
