Marko: Pierre Gasly is not a number two driver

Pierre Gasly need not worry that Red Bull will force him into a number two driver role as Helmut Marko insists that is “off limits” at Red Bull.

Joining Red Bull’s senior team, Gasly will take on the challenge that is Max Verstappen in 2019.

That, though, may not be an easy one as with Verstappen being billed as a future World Champion, team boss Christian Horner has spoken about wanting to build a team that is centered around the Dutchman.

“I think he can see the strength and depth of the team,” Horner told Autosport.

“He feels comfortable in the team. He’s the youngest grand prix winner, he’s the youngest double winner, he’s the youngest points scorer.

“The obvious thing is to build a team around you.

“But it’s down to us to provide him with a competitive car.”

However, Red Bull advisor Marko has assured Gasly that he needn’t worry about being shoved into a number two role.

“He is not a number two driver,” Marko insisted to Auto Bild. “That is off limits at Red Bull.

“Max took the next step last season and Daniel Ricciardo noticed that.

“But Max will give Gasly the time he needs, so my guess is that he’ll be closer to Max in qualifying.

“That is normal for a debutant in a top team. ”

Gasly has already warned his team-mate that he has joined Red Bull to play number two to another driver.

“Being one of the best drivers right now will be a great challenge for me,” Gasly told Motorsport-Total.

“It will take some time for me to be competitive, but I am not here to be the number two driver, that’s not what I want or what I’m happy with.

“These things take some time, and Max is one of the fastest guys in the paddock, which is super exciting for me, because it brings you to a higher level.

“For sure, I’ll be better over the course of the season.”
