Alex Albon: No clear RB 'instructions', qualifying improving | F1 News by PlanetF1

Alex Albon said Red Bull haven’t given him any specific instructions on what he must to do keep his seat for 2021.

At a time when the Thai driver was coming under serious scrutiny for his performances, P3 at the Tuscan Grand Prix, his first podium in Formula 1, was supposed to be the moment where he broke through the mental barrier and showed what he was truly capable of in a Red Bull.

However, it definitely hasn’t turned out that way, and Albon’s performance at the Russian Grand Prix was met with widespread criticism.

Red Bull by now will be tired of repeating their stance that Albon is very much their preferred option for 2021 alongside Verstappen, but with the young talent pool looking dry at the moment, the team may end up having to look outside their programme for the first time.

But, what exactly must Albon do to secure his seat? In qualifying for the Portuguese GP he was half a second slower than Verstappen who will start from P3, while Albon will be battling the midfield pack from P6.

Well, Albon says there are no specific “instructions” or “goals” determined by Red Bull to keep his seat.

“I know I’ve got to get the job done,” he is quoted by RaceFans.net.

“That’s no secret in this sport. Obviously, performance is priority, but there are no set goals in terms of statistics or anything.

“It’s just improvements and, of course, closing the gap to Max. That’s a very easy way to look at it. But in terms of that sense, I haven’t been given an instruction.

“I feel qualifying has been improving, of course, there’s still a gap [to Verstappen]. But in general I feel like things are coming together a bit more and you just need good weekends, clean weekends. I think that’s important.”

Albon has said previously that he doesn’t pay any attention to media speculation over his future and repeated that stance.

“Truthfully, I don’t care what the media has to say,” he confirmed.

“I’m focussed on the relationship between me and the team and the lap time in the car. There’s nothing that’s going to change my lap time by looking at my phone. So I kind of focus on the stuff that matters.”
