Kubica hails Alonso as 'one of the best'

Robert Kubica says while Fernando Alonso may be perceived by some as arrogant, they are confused by his “desire” to be the best.

Alonso walked away from Formula 1 at the end of 2018 with two World titles, 32 race wins and 22 pole positions.

The Spaniard, though, has been a divisive figure in the pit lane.

While some applaud him for his achievements, others believe he causes problems within teams which has cost him throughout his career.

“Fernando Alonso has had the chance to win up to five world championships, but the reality is that there is always a mess wherever he is,” triple World Champion Nelson Piquet told broadcaster La Sexta last year.

“He is a fantastic driver, but also one who generates a lot of problems and in the end everyone ends up leaving the team.”

Piquet is not the only one to share that sentiment about the Spaniard.

However, Kubica feels Alonso is just misunderstood.

“Sometimes people confuse the desire to get better with arrogance or bad character,” GPBlog quotes the Williams driver as having told Movistar F1.

“Alonso has become World Champion because of his strong character.

“He is not only one of the best drivers, but the best driver in Formula 1.”
