Hot Acura NSX Type R with 650 hp to debut in Tokyo?

The rumour mill is at it again, this time suggesting that the Acura NSX will be the latest recipient of the iconic Type R badge. According to a Forbes report, the NSX Type R will make its debut in October this year at the Tokyo Motor Show, and it could pack as much as 650 hp.

In its current form, the hybrid sports car boasts an output of 573 hp and 645 Nm of torque, which is good enough to send it rocketing from zero to 60 mph (0 to 96 km/h) in 3.1 seconds. With the NSX Type R, the same sprint could be done in under three seconds. Upgrades such as stiffer suspension and larger carbon-ceramic brakes have also been tipped.

Other additions include more aerodynamic components like a fixed rear spoiler, as well as a front splitter that’s inspired by the Honda NSX-GT race car (it competes in Japan’s Super GT championships).

Whether or not the NSX Type R will still use the same Super Handling-All Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system remains to be seen. As a refresher, the NSX GT3 ditches the SH-AWD system and factory-fitted nine-speed dual-clutch auto in favour of a six-speed sequential-shift racing gearbox, with power delivered exclusively to the rear.

Lastly, the report said the NSX Type R’s sticker price will be around US$200,000 (RM840k), up from the current US$157,500 (RM660k) base price.

However, an Acura spokesperson told Motor1 that the original article published on Forbes was “speculative and did not contain information on sourcing. While we have no announcements to make regarding future plans for NSX, we are pleased that numerous chassis improvements and an expanded colour palette for model-year 2019 have yielded a 42% increase in US sales.”
