2018 Los Angeles Motor Show: preview

Carmakers prepare to see 2018 out with a bang at the Los Angeles Motor Show later this month

The final big motor show of the year is almost upon us. Taking place at the end of November, the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show is the third American expo on the international motor show calendar, and generally, LA tends to have more European-relevant new metal on show than Detroit and New York.

LA is one of the oldest motor shows still running; the event was first held back in 1907. Manufacturers from the United States and the rest of the world descend on the Convention Center every year to showcase their brand new production cars and ground-breaking concept designs.

• LA Motor Show 2017: round-up

Taking place right in the middle of Los Angeles, this year’s show begins on 28 November with the first press day, before the show doors open to the public on 30 November, and close on 9 December.

As ever, we’ll have boots on the ground at the show, bringing you the latest news as it happens right here on this page.

With the show now less than a month away, we already have a good idea of what’s coming – though there are always a few surprises. Here’s our preview of the 2018 Los Angeles Motor Show, detailing the relevant cars for the European market. We’ll add to this list as each brand confirms what they are taking to the show.

2018 Los Angeles Motor Show: A-Z

Audi

• Audi e-tron GT Concept

Audi has already confirmed that a new e-tron concept is heading to the Los Angeles Motor Show, which will preview an upcoming, high-performance, all-electric four-door coupe. Confirmed for production in 2020, the e-tron GT Concept will eventually turn into the brand’s Porsche Mission E alternative.

BMW

• BMW 8 Series Convertible
• BMW 340i
• BMW Vision iNEXT
• BMW X7

There will be plenty to see on the BMW stand. Headlining the show for the brand will be the new X7 – a full size Range Rover rival and the largest SUV BMW has ever made. We’ll also get to see the new 8 Series Convertible in the metal for the first time, alongside the six-cylinder 340i 3 Series and the huge BMW Vision iNEXT concept.

Kia

• New Kia model

According to the LA show’s official website, Kia will debut a brand new production model. We don’t actually know for certain what it could be though. Our spy snappers recently caught the next-generation Soul on camera, but the new car on show in Los Angeles could easily just be a US market model.

Mazda

• Mazda 3

One of the stories of the show will be over on the Mazda stand, with the world debut of the all-new fourth-generation Mazda 3. Previewed last year, the hatchback variant of the new Mazda 3 should stick pretty close to the design principles outlined by the Kai concept. Both hatchback and fastback variants are expected, while under the bonnet, the Mazda 3 will be the first model to use the firm’s new Skyactiv-X engine technology.

Porsche

• Porsche 911

While most recent Porsche news has concerned the brand’s turn towards electrification with the upcoming Taycan, a new 911 will take the brand squarely back to its roots at the LA show. The new 992 generation 911 will make its full debut – the latest chapter in the iconic model’s 45 year evolution. We anticipate the new-generation car will be showcased in Carrera form, with high powered Turbo, GT2 and GT3 models further down the line. Porsche is also tipped to introduce a plug-in hybrid 911 during the 992’s lifecycle too.
