For truth in advertising, J.C. Whitney even used rear-wheel horsepower.
When I had the world’s sketchiest ’58 Beetle in high school, I worshiped the Volkswagen section of the J.C. Whitney catalog. So many speed parts! Still, you couldn’t buy a bolt-on supercharger kit from the 1983 JCW catalog; for that, you needed to go back in time a decade or so, to the 1971 J.C. Whitney Imported Cars catalog. There, you’d find this amazing Judson supercharger kit for air-cooled 36- and 40-horsepower Volkswagens (1954 through 1965 models), which converted those hilariously slow cars into… well, tolerably peppy cars.
Keep in mind that $143.95 in 1971 dollars comes to around $930 when adjusted for inflation, but that would have been worth it.
