1987 Mustang LX Coupe

Rob Storm, Saylorsburg, PA

For something a little different we bring you Rob Storm’s 1987 LX coupe. In its infancy, the car featured an XR4TI swap, but the engine combination has been a fluid situation over the years. These days it sports a 0.030-over 1986 SVO block 2.3L with JE pistons, Crower rods, a BoPort Stage 3–ported iron head with a Stage 2.1 roller-cam, and beehive springs. The engine uses an SVO intake that has been massaged and rotated 90 degrees forward and ported to fit a T-bird Super Coupe throttle-body. The turbo is a Precision 5558S single with a custom header, a Precision 46mm wastegate, and 3-inch exhaust. The combination relies on a Stinger PiMP Microsquirt ECU. Behind the little powerhouse is a 1986 SVO T-5 with a 3.50 first gear to really help get things going, while a tubular front end with coilovers and Koni dampers works with 5300C springs and 1993 Cobra sway bars. Braking is done via Cobra brakes up front with SVO discs out back. Speaking of which, the rearend is an 8.8 out of a Lincoln LSC with 4.10 gears. The car sits on GT350 replica wheels wearing Bridgestone RE71R tires. The car is painted Dupont Pewter and covers a Fox GT front bumper cover with Agent 47 brake ducts, a Makers Garage carbon splitter, and a Saleen rear wing. Since the car’s primary use is on the autocross track, the car features Corbeau GTS seats and a custom roll bar.
