The Subaru Justy was the first CVT-equipped car to be sold in large numbers in North America (no, the DAF wasn't sold in large numbers here), and the combination of not-fully-perfected CVT and three-cylinder engine resulted in a legendarily slow car. I've driven a CVT Justy, and the only car I can name offhand that was slower was the Diesel Rabbit in which I took my driver-training classes. Somehow, though, Subaru claimed that the 1989 Justy would beat both the automatic Hyundai Excel and the automatic Toyota Tercel in a 0-60 race, literally blowing their doors off. The automatic Porsche 928 — which sold for much more than the cost of nine Justys in 1989 — did manage to blow the doors off the Justy, however.
