While some makers have been pulling back on mid-size sedans, Toyota fully redesigned its mainstay Camry on a new platform for the 2018 model year with better driving manners and updated features along with the Camry’s traditional core values of comfort, reliability and value. The 2019 Camry carries over mostly unchanged, with the most notable update being the addition of Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility.

The 2020 Camry also will bring mostly only incremental changes. Notable exceptions are new Android Auto integration and a sportier-looking TRD performance trim level (CarPlay was made available as a retrofit for the 2018s). A Toyota spokesman told Cars.com that there is no information available yet on whether an Android Auto retrofit will be offered for the 2018 and 2019 models of this latest-generation Camry.
The Camry’s rivals among mainstream mid-size sedans include the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Mazda6, Kia Optima, Chevrolet Malibu and newly redesigned Subaru Legacy, as well as the Hyundai Sonata, which has a full redesign for 2020. Like most of them, the Camry is a front-wheel-drive sedan, though the Altima offers all-wheel drive and the Legacy has it standard. The Camry, however, is the only one with a V-6 option, while the power upgrades available for others are turbocharged four-cylinder engines.
The Camry also offers a very high-mileage hybrid version that competes with the Accord and Chevy Malibu hybrids, as well as the Kia Optima and Hyundai Sonata, both of which offer hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. While the Malibu Hybrid is not returning for 2020, according to Green Car Reports and confirmed by GM, updated hybrid versions of the redone Sonata are expected.
