The 2019 BMW X5 mid-size luxury SUV has earned the highest award in Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crashworthiness testing — Top Safety Pick Plus — though it applies only to X5s with the best available (and mostly optional) headlights.
The X5 earned a top good rating in all six IIHS crash tests. In addition to the driver-side small and moderate overlap, side, roof-strength and head-restraints evaluations, the X5’s overall rating includes in the new passenger-side small overlap front crash test, in which a top score now is required in 2019 for a Top Safety Pick Plus award. The SUV also got the top score of superior for its standard front crash prevention system with automatic emergency braking. It avoided collisions from 12 mph and 25 mph in IIHS testing.
The X5’s best available headlights also got the required top score of good. Those are standard on the higher Executive trim level, but otherwise are an extra-cost option. The base headlight system was rated poor.

Comparing the X5 to other BMW SUVs, the smaller X3 also earned a Top Safety Pick Plus, while the X2 was a notch lower with a Top Safety Pick (minus the Plus). The X5’s IIHS award also keeps pace with similar top ratings for rival SUVs from Mercedes-Benz and Acura, and beats competitors from Volvo and Audi.
