2019 Mazda3: Everything You Need to Know

Small cars might be falling out of favor with consumers, but automakers are still offering up new designs. The latest is the 2019 Mazda3, the fourth-generation redesign of Mazda's compact mainstay. With simplified styling, available mild-hybrid technology and all-wheel drive, the Mazda3 is on sale now.

Compact cars aren't the class they once were, as models from Detroit automakers are either discontinued or face an uncertain future. But consumers still have plenty of choices to shop the Mazda3 against, among them the Honda Civic, Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla and Volkswagen's Jetta and Golf siblings. Mazda's newly available AWD — a first for the nameplate — gives Subaru Impreza shoppers a rival to compare, too.

Available as a hatchback or sedan, the Mazda3 competes with the whole group, and Mazda doubtless hopes to improve on the prior generation's seventh-place finish in Cars.com's 2017 Compact Sedan Challenge. But the redesign doesn't come cheap: Pricing with destination starts around $22,000 for the 2019 Mazda3 sedan and $24,500 for the hatchback, up considerably versus the outgoing model. Still, the redesign comes standard with an automatic transmission and Mazda's larger (2.5-liter) engine, two items that cost extra on the outgoing car.
