The Genesis G90 may be the best bargain going in luxury today, offering flagship levels of refinement and performance at a significantly lower price point than its more established competition. For 2020, the G90 gets its first refresh since the flagship sedan’s introduction as a 2017 model and it includes significant styling updates, but only subtle changes inside and to the driving experience. That’s no slight, as those two elements in particular are what helped the G90 stand out in addition to its value.

I completely understand the rationale for the G90’s new exterior styling. Genesis wants to increase awareness of the car among BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class shoppers, and a good way to do that is to show up to the party in a flashy outfit. All of the body panels have changed both front and rear; only the doors and roof go untouched, and what’s new is very bold, indeed. Attracting most of the attention is the G90’s positively Cyrano de Bergerac-esque schnoz, which gets adorned with a rather large grille that dips hard down to the bumper. As if its size weren’t enough, it’s also outfitted with an eye-catching horizontal diamond pattern finished in chrome.
It’s a design element intended to cause some discussion, and I’m guessing some debate, as well. That was true among Cars.com editors, myself included; I even called the car “offensive” after seeing it for the first time at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. But after driving it and seeing it out in the wild rather than under the auto show’s bright lights, much of my fervor has subsided, and if you ask me today, I think it’s OK. (The wheels, however, are fantastic.) If you don’t like the grille, you may want to look away — it crops up again on the forthcoming 2021 GV80 SUV, though it doesn’t appear to be as prominent on a taller vehicle.
The changes to the inside of the G90 don’t match the dramatic updates outside. It still feels like a $100,000 interior, though you get it for much less than that. The big change is that the 12.3-inch multimedia screen is now a touchscreen, as well, which makes for easier operation than solely using the circular dial in the center console. The system also adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay to give drivers more connectivity options.
Safety features have been augmented, with nine new safety technologies making their way onto the 2020 G90 — most notably highway drive assist (with lane centering), a blind spot monitor and safe exit assist for the rear doors. All of this goes for a starting price of $73,195, which represents a $2,850 increase over the 2019 version (price includes a $995 destination charge). That’s still a screaming deal since the G90’s competitors all stretch far into six figures.
