Here’s some good news for the 125,000 handraisers on lists to get a GMC Hummer EV full-size electric pickup truck. Preproduction is coming to an end at the Factory Zero plant in Detroit-Hamtramck and the factory is moving to final production of the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. Deliveries to customers will start in December, Vice President of Global GMC Duncan Aldred said in a call with media today. The next step is reaching out to interested customers to turn their reservations into orders.
There was already high demand for the pickup that launches with the top-trim Edition 1 with a starting price of $112,595. Last week GM had an event at the plant where President Joe Biden took a 1,000-hp Hummer for a quick spin. The publicity led to a jump in interest and the lists got substantially longer, Aldred says. Factory Zero will start by assembling only the Edition 1 launch model which comes in white with a black-painted upper portion. It is an exclusive trim, but Aldred will not say how many will be built.
2022 GMC Hummer EV is a Heavy-Duty Pickup
Edition 1 has a range of 329 miles, Aldred says. It comes with all the bells and whistles, including the extreme off-road package, underbody shields, three skid plates, rock sliders, and 35-inch mud-terrain tires. That is on top of three motors, a 24-module battery pack, air suspension, and a lot of tech. It is a large truck to start with, and loaded this way it is heavy enough to be classified as a heavy-duty truck.
Edition 1 models will be assembled through 2022. In 2023, the line will add the EV3X, with the same three-motor powertrain as Edition 1, and a starting price of $99,995. Future models, from EV3X down, will be classified as light-duty and have greater range, Aldred confirms. Working down the line, the EV2X model will be added later in 2023, with two motors and a starting price of $89,995. The most affordable entry EV2, with two motors and the least range, is not available until spring 2024 with a starting price of $79,995.
GMC Hummer Buyers Seeking Top Trims
Aldred thinks most of the handraisers will convert to ultimate buyers—about half have secured reservations with deposits. Equally promising is that 80 percent of interested customers want the top-spec models.
Also in the pipeline: the 2024 GMC Hummer SUV and an electric GMC Sierra full-size pickup, cousin to the Chevrolet Silverado EV also in the works. Numerous crossovers for all GM brands are also coming. General Motors has said it hopes to sell only electric vehicles by 2035.
