It’s unfortunately common for health practitioners to fail to warn patients of the potential impairment from certain medications, particularly when taking the medications while driving, a new AAA study has found. Nearly half of drivers surveyed admitted to taking what AAA classes as “potentially driver impairing” (PDI) before getting behind the wheel, and many reported they weren’t made aware of any potential risk.
What AAA surveyed as “potentially driver impairing” include medications like muscle relaxers, sleep aids, amphetamines, antidepressants, antihistamines and cough medicines, and prescription pain meds. Nearly half of those surveyed reported taking one or more of the meds before driving, and 70 percent reported taking up to three or more. The most common medication taken were amphetamines, followed by antidepressants, antihistamines, prescription pain meds, and muscle relaxers. Sleep aids were unsurprisingly the lowest, as the reason for not operating heavy machinery with those drugs is literally in their name.
But some of these medications, like amphetamines and antidepressants, are often taken daily, so it’d be hard to avoid driving. That’s not AAA’s main concern; the study is more worried about a lack of awareness and dialogue, and people taking medication without consulting their doctor, or prescribers not offering guidance on taking the medications.
“Understandably, it may seem impossible for patients to maintain their independence behind the wheel and use the medications they need to stay healthy. It turns out we can achieve both goals, but not without guidance from our doctor or pharmacist,” said Jake Nelson, AAA’s director of traffic safety advocacy and research. “Our research suggests too few medical professionals provide these warnings or suggest ways patients can navigate this tough challenge.”
AAA suggests drivers always ask about driving impairment when discussing medications, and when necessary, to talk to their doctors about dosage changes, adjusting when they take the meds, or exploring alternatives that may not share the same side effects.
