New 2022 Maserati Grecale Folgore spotted testing
It seems as if the car industry can’t get enough of electric SUVs, and now Maserati is now looking to enter the game with an electric version of the upcoming Porsche Macan rivalling Grecale, called the Grecale Folgore.
Folgore means lightning in Italian and we expect to see that name appear on the end of every pure-electric Maserati from now on. Sitting below the Levante, this new Grecale Folgore model will compete with the likes of Tesla’s Model Y, Audi’s Q4 e-tron and the upcoming Porsche Macan EV in the mid-sized SUV category and is likely to sit on a modified version of the Alfa Romeo Stelvio platform.

From these new spy shots we can see the design will be almost identical to the petrol-powered Grecale heavily teased by Maserati ahead of its unveiling. Although there are a few distinguishing features to highlight its electric powertrain.
Unsurprisingly, the quad tailpipe arrangement is no more. Instead, we get a flush rear bumper. The three front wing vents that have become a staple of Maserati design are also absent as there’s no engine for them to help cool. An electric warning sticker also hints at this car’s electric powertrain.
And in terms of that new electric powertrain, power and torque figures for the electric model are yet to be confirmed, but Maserati has previously suggested that the platform will feature 800-volt battery technology (like the Porsche Taycan) and support up to 300kW rapid-charging.
Production of the Grecale will take place in Maserati’s Cassino plant in Italy, with the firm planning an €800 million (around £690 million) investment to set up the facility for the car’s production.
