Deliveries are scheduled to commence before the end of the year.
Developed from the ground up, the next-generation 1 Series has been a long time coming taking into account the outgoing model has been around since 2011. The revamped version is still not here yet, but the wait is almost over as BMW has just announced the completely new compact hatchback will be launched this fall. Not only that, but the first customer deliveries are scheduled to kick off before the end of the year. Needless to say, we’re talking about the European market.
Although an exact date for the official premiere is not mentioned in the press release attached below, there’s a pretty good chance the 1 Series will celebrate its public debut at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show in September. If that will be the case, an online reveal could occur a few weeks sooner since that seems to be the norm nowadays in a new model’s timetable.
Based on the FAAR platform serving as an evolution of the BMW Group’s UKL architecture, the new 1 Series has been spied inside and out multiple times already. Not only will it change everything underneath the skin, but the design is also going to represent a significant departure from the outgoing model. It’ll be the same story with the interior, which was captured by our spies recently.
By far the biggest change will be the switch from a rear-wheel-drive platform to a FWD-based setup. While that will surely upset purists much like it was the case with the BMW minivans, the vast majority won’t know or care about the car’s new configuration. Doing so will allow the German marque to create a vastly improved cabin in terms of roominess, which will be further enhanced by the new packaging. In addition, BMW will reportedly save as much as $741 per each car built compared to an equivalent RWD 1 Series model, so it will really be a win-win situation.
The United States won’t be getting the 1 Series hatchback, but Americans will be able to buy something similar in a more practical and stylish package. We’re talking about the 2 Series Gran Coupe, which was teased earlier today by BMW ahead of a full reveal scheduled for November at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The market launch is programmed for mid-2020.
