Apocalypse Manufacturing’s Ford Bronco 6×6 Called Dark Horse

We commissioned a rendering of a Bronco 6×6 back in July 2020. Lo and behold, the six-wheeled creation has come to life, and no thanks to us this time. We’d like to think Apocalypse Manufacturing took inspiration for its Dark Horse Ford Bronco 6×6 from our rendering, but that’s probably not the case. The company specializes in these 6×6 builds and was hellbent on making the six-wheel-drive mod as soon as it could get a Bronco into its Florida-based shop.

Apocalypse has over 150 tandem-axled 6×6’s on the road today, including the Doomsday, HellFire, Sinister 6, and Warlord. Their latest, the Dark Horse, is a Ford Bronco through and through, with the small exception that it’s length stretched by 3 feet, it grew an extra set of wheels, and there’s now a truck bed in the back.

The Dark Horse Bronco transformed from a 189-inch-long four-wheeled SUV into a 225-inch-long six-wheeled super truck. The extra rear axle necessitated elongating the whole dang SUV, which was achieved through the addition of a custom five-foot bed.

To bring the Dark Horse to life, the Bronco was split in half behind the rear doors and that whole section—including the original axle, rear end, and suspension—was moved back a bunch to make room for a second set of rear wheels to sandwich between the originals. The factory roll bar, retaining its original location, extends into the new bed. Sounds simple enough, but seriously, don’t get overconfident and cut your frame in half at home; we would save it for the pros.

The rear drivetrain of the 6×6 Bronco is obviously the main event of Apocalypse Manufacturing’s Dark Horse build. The patented custom tandem middle-axle, created in-house by Apocalypse, powers all the wheels; the four rear wheels are always powered, and the front axle can be powered in addition to create six-wheel-drive, if you want the extra grunt.

The 4-inch lift coilover suspension provides a nice ride when combined with a steering stabilizer and 37-inch Patagonia tires wrapped around custom, in-house 20-inch SFJ (SoFlo Jeeps) alloy wheels (pictured), but you have other options if you’re fronting the cost to buy a truck. Steel sidesteps help occupants with entry and egress. A Kevlar-coated front steel bumper has room for lights and recovery hooks and fits the doomsday motif of the Dark Horse.

The 2.7-liter twin-turbo V-6 produces 400 hp, a 70+hp gain over the factory output thanks to software tuning, larger injectors, and a custom exhaust system. Future Dark Horse builds could get a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 good for over 700 hp, a mod that would put the Dark Horse officially over-the-top.

A custom slant-back fiberglass hardtop roof can be removed—along with the doors—for open-air cruising and for a closer look at that delectable interior. The King Ranch-style marine-grade dark brown leather interior is classy but not overdone, with black accents perfectly complementing the rest of the interior.

No one would be crazy enough to leave this type of interior vulnerable to the elements, but should an accident happen, the interior is weather resistant and able to withstand heat, rain, and snow.

Apocalypse Manufacturing claims its Dark Horse 6×6 is the “world’s first” Ford Bronco 6×6. While we can’t be sure about that, this particular build, the first of many that Apocalypse intents to create, will be auctioned at Barrett-Jackson for no reserve during the Palm Beach, Florida, show in April 2022.
