New DVLA number plates are released twice a year on March 1st and September 1st. New cars registered on or after those dates wear the new relevant age identifier – which is the two numbers after the first two letters on the plates. For example, new 2019 cars will be given a ’19’ plate if they are registered between March 1st and August 31st. Cars registered from September 1st to the following February 28th will be given the ’69’ age identifier marker.
Every year when the new number plates are introduced there is a list of letter and number combinations that will be automatically omitted.
The reason that certain plates are removed before they enter circulation is due to the fact that they could be taken as being rude, offensive or potentially controversial.
Similarly, political and religious plates are also often removed as they could be taken offensively to some motorists.
Each year there are nuances between which plates are taken out of circulation due to the way certain numbers look.
There are, however, some plates which are instantly removed, for example, for example, words such as SEX and ASS will be removed.
Other four letter combinations such as B** UMS and FA** RTS are similarly removed to help prevent any offence being made.
Some examples of omissions that were made this year include registrations such as OR19 SMS or BU19 GRY and DO19 POO have been omitted.
A DVLA Spokesperson said: “The vast majority of registration numbers are made available but the Agency holds back any combinations that may cause offence, embarrassment or are in poor taste.
“Many people enjoy displaying a personalised registration number and there are over 50 million registrations available on our website, https://dvlaregistrations.dvla.gov.uk, with almost endless possibilities of combinations to suit a person’s taste, interests, and budget with prices starting at just £250.”
Here are a few examples of the 19-plate registration which have been removed this year.

One such example of this was from 2017 when the plate JH11 HAD was spotted in South Wales.
2019 ’19’ number plates will enter circulation on March 1, 2019, and will be applied to new cars until August 31, 2019.
After this day newly registered cars will sport the ’69’ number plate age identifier.
