UK motorists could cut the overall cost of their car insurance by making a simple change at their home. Vehicle owners could be better off parking on the road than in a garage, suggest new research. It has been a commonly held belief that parking in a garage could save you money off the cost of you cover compared to on the streets. However, new research from Vantage Leasing suggests that this is not strictly the case.
It found that you could actually cut the cost of your cover by 10 per cent if you leave your car parked on the road compared to in a secured garage.
According to the study, it is also marginally cheaper to park on the road compared to on a driveway.
Experts also suggest that an increase in relay attacks could be impacting lower insurance quotes for vehicles parked on the street.
Factors such as your job, or who you use your vehicle could also see the cost of your cover soar.
The research also outlined which occupation pay the least for their insurance.
It looked at the 10 most common jobs according to the Office for National Statistics and ranked them from one to 10 (April 2019).
The research found that the computer programmers would pay on average £553.37 for cover while catering staff would pay £659.27.

Rob Walker, managing director at Vantage Leasing, said: “The research is eye-opening, dispelling common myths including that penalty points could spell disaster when it comes to insurance costs.
“We also see how the latest trends in car crime such as keyless theft can impact how insurers view risk – hence why parking on the road at night is often cheaper.
“While the research shows what a typical male or female driver can expect, it doesn’t cover every eventuality, and some may find their circumstances produce different results.
“It does, however, provide some intriguing insights into the ever-evolving nature of vehicle insurance.”
