For SEMA last year, Chevrolet created a gnarly electric dragster out of a Camaro—the eCOPO. With over 700 hp, the eCOPO Camaro can rip nine-second quarter-miles with ease. And yes, it’ll pull wheelies, too. If this sounds like something you’d like in your life, this one-off concept will be auctioned by Russo and Steele in Monterey on Friday night.
The eCOPO’s 700 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque come from two Borg-Warner electric motors powered up by four 200-volt batteries. The rest of the hardware is standard COPO Camaro—GM Turbo 400 automatic transmission, solid rear axle, and big slick tires. Chevy used the eCOPO as a test bed to develop an electric crate motor, something which it’s considering offering to the public. That’s why the motors use the same bellhouse mounting pattern as an LS V-8.
Roadshow reports that Chevy doesn’t actually own the eCOPO, so it’s possibly being consigned by Washington drag-racing shop Hancock and Lane Racing, which helped develop the car. Russo and Steele’s auction listing doesn’t have a ton of info on the car, but notes that there’s “support [and] training available for running/servicing vehicle.”
It’s hard to assign a value to a car like this. We’ve reached out to Russo and Steele, and we’ll update this story if we hear back from the auction house. In the meantime, it’s worth noting second-hand prices for regular 2019 COPO Camaros are in the $150,000-plus range. The eCOPO, I’d argue, is much cooler, so it should command a premium. We’ll find out for sure in due course.
