In hopes of sharing his passion for classic Chevrolet models, Monte Hollertz, a farmer and car collector, opened the Chevyland USA car museum in Elm Creek, Nebraska. Located a stone’s throw away from Interstate 80, the museum welcomed its first guests in the early 1970s and quickly became a favorite attraction among car enthusiasts.
At its peak, the museum saw upwards of 100 visitors daily and housed more than 80 vintage vehicles. Decades later, interest gradually faded, and two years ago, Hollertz decided to close Chevyland permanently due to the decline in traffic. After his passing in 2020, his son Al Hollert took over the entire collection, and it is currently for sale on BigIron Auctions.
The wide-ranging auction features an assortment of vintage cars, auto parts, collectibles, motorcycles, tractors, and even a fire truck. There are also several lots of some cool-looking scale diecast models.
A 1915 Chevrolet Baby Grand Touring H4 is among one of the oldest Chevys up for sale. Another listing with a checkered history is a 1965 Chevy Impala used as a getaway car in a deadly bank robbery in Big Springs, Nebraska. As reported in the Omaha World-Herald, the said Impala was a rental from a Hertz lot.
Although Chevrolet makes up most of the car collection, there are a few oddballs in the mix, such as a 1965 Volkswagen Laser 917 Kit Car and a 1981 Volkswagen Rabbit 2WD Pickup. Dominating the auction is a gorgeous convertible 1969 Chevrolet Stingray Corvette with just under 6,800 miles and in need of some TLC. And closely behind the Corvette, a 1967 Impala SS Convertible has also garnered serious attention.
Bidding on all items is still open, and the online auction ends this Thursday, May 6. For those interested in browsing through the 500-plus item collection on BigIron Auctions, visit this link here.
