Gary Wilson, head of the Historic and Classic Vehicle Alliance (HCVA) has warned “time will tell” if vehicles have been affected in any way by the new petrol compound. He warned classic car owners were likely to know the true extent of E10’s effects by “spring” in a blow to motorists concerned for their vehicle’s safety.

Speaking to Express.co.uk, he said: “I guess only time will tell in a lot of these things.

“Come the spring we will soon know, won’t we? When the balloon goes up and everyone’s like ‘oh my God’.

“But we will see.”

The warning comes just months after another motoring expert warned the impacts of the new fuel could take months to appear.

Back in November, Jonathan Barbara, managing director of Parkers MOT warned it could take between “six months to a year” to see the full effect.

He warned at this stage, drivers may see some “bigger problems” which may not be able to be quickly solved.

He previously told Express.co.uk: “Winter is going to be the biggest issue.

“Obviously, there is more moisture in the air.

“Possibly there will be times over Christmas where we don’t use our cars as much.

“Most definitely, without a shadow of a doubt, give it six months to a year we are going to see some bigger problems coming along.

“Most problems can be rectified in a service but some of them won’t be.
