For the third year in a row Roadkill’s Zip Tie Drags presented by FiTech at Tucson Dragway is back, and we decided to tag along for the adventure. The whole deal kicks off with a cruise from Irwindale to Tucson, Arizona covering 500 miles across the desert! Everyone was at the Irwindale Event Center parking lot bright and early to load up on coffee and donuts with a few people scrambling to put the finishing touches on their projects before a full day on the road. There was a little bit of everything including tons of trucks, station wagons, more-doors, and even a little Opel with a circle track motor shoehorned into the engine bay and road signs for floors. Leave it to Roadkill to bring together such an odd assortment of vehicles to one spot. Despite our obvious differences, we all hit the road as one group and charged across the desert, everyone with the nervous expectation that something may go wrong with their mode of transportation at any moment.
Somehow all the cars seemed to be holding together just fine and after a quick stop in Blythe, California for lunch the convoy became scattered among the droves of econoboxes and 18-wheelers that fill the interstate. Night fell as the bleary-eyed travelers trickled into grounds of Tucson Dragway while some found their way to the car show lot, and others got their cars through tech inspection and headed for the drag strip. As the chilly desert air settled over the parking lot, our devoted event team lit the massive bonfire and broke out the materials for those in attendance to craft s’mores while futilely attempting to keep all the hair on their arms. As always so many great people came out to hang out and meet Mike Finnegan and David Freiburger, their favorite internet disaster artists.
The best part is that this is only the pre-party, and for the first time it looks like the entirety of Saturday’s festivities should go off without the pesky weather we’ve had in years past dampening the fun. Either way there will be plenty of interesting machines on the premises, exciting drag racing brought to us by Gear Vendors Overdrive on the strip, and tons of great people. For now just click through this massive gallery of quality photos documenting the cruise from Irwindale to Tucson and pretend like you were along for the ride!
