He purchased the unique designs “BJ69 XXl”, “BJ69 GOB”, “BJ69 BLW” and “BJ69 SEK” after believing he could buy the plates and sell them on for more money.

He said: “It was a Saturday night and I tried this thing called gin and tonic. We had some friends over and half a bottle went.

“I’m always thinking of money-making ideas and it seemed like a good idea at the time. I ended up spending nearly £1,600.”

The 69 number plate symbolises which were built and put into road service from September 2019 to March 2020 will be used on all new vehicles.

DVLA chiefs have confirmed some inappropriate statements on number plates do get banned in a mild crackdown on rude messages.

Any number plate including the words SEX, BUM or ASS are automatically excluded from the DVLA’s new registration releases and cannot be purchased.

Recent research revealed a third of drivers wanted to have a rude or saucy registration plate on their vehicle.

The poll also found those motorists who wanted a plate would be also be tempted to buy a completely new car if it had a unique or seedy combination.

Mat Watson, motoring expert at carwow said: “Drivers are always looking at ways to personalise their car, with modern drivers now more than ever seeing it as an extension of who they are and a reflection of their status, so it’s no surprise to see how many vanity plates are on the road.

“Considering there are strict guidelines around what number plate combinations are and aren’t approved, with swear words and saucy acts all previously banned by the DVLA, some of the plates you can get away with are quite surprising providing you’re willing to be creative, and the new numbers certainly give drivers something to work with.”

A total of £111million was spent on private reg plates in 2017 alone as motorists flocked to secure their unique designs.

Some number plate websites are already taking orders on the next “20” range of reg numbers which come into effect in March.
