For the third year in a row, Roadkill’s Zip Tie Drags, presented by FiTech, was held at Tucson Dragway, and all of the action on the strip was brought to you by Gear Vendors Overdrive. If you’ve never been to a Roadkill event, you’re probably unaware of the ridiculous hoopties that fans cobble together to run down the strip, and while one will find many questionable-looking machines in the staging lanes, there are also a few serious cars in the mix, making this some fun racing to watch.
We were on the scene to capture some of the action with open test and tune running most of the day until it was time for the Fans Vs. Freiburger and Finnegan shootout, where eight contestants’ names were drawn for the chance to run their rides down the strip next to either Mike Finnegan or David Freiburger piloting one of Roadkill’s project vehicles. Needless to say, Freiburger and Finnegan’s cars were knocked out of contention early on, and Drag Week veteran Jim Forbes went on to take the win in his altered wheelbase Chevy II gasser.
All in all it was a fun-filled day of drag racing, with serious competition taking a backseat to simply having a good time. If you’ve never had the chance to make it out to one of these events at least you can live vicariously through the photo gallery we put together of racers from this year’s Zip-Tie Drags for your enjoyment!
