Research from KwiFit found drivers add around 126kg to their car after packing for a staycation trip. However, they warn drivers then fail to make any adjustments to tyre pressures which increases the issue.

KwikFit says a fully-laden car requires more fuel to use with the problem only magnified when vehicles are fitted with underinflated tyres due to rolling resistance.

They claim an additional 45kg of luggage can reduce a car’s fuel economy by one percent.

This means drivers could see their fuel consumption reduced by up to three percent once staycation luggage has been packed in the vehicle.

Meanwhile, a tyre under-inflated by just 0.2 bar can increase consumption by one percent.

Roger Griggs, director of communications at KwikFit warned the extra percent could prove “significant”.

He has urged drivers to always check their tyre pressures and adjust these before setting off on a long journey.

He said: “Increasing fuel consumption by a few percent might not seem much.

“But with British families expecting to travel an average of 323 miles on their UK holidays, the total extra fuel consumption from underinflated tyres will be significant.

“We urge drivers to check their pressures are correct for the car’s load – they will usually be able to find the recommended pressures on a sticker inside the drivers’ door.

“And it’s important not to take more than you need.”

KwikFit says drivers can check tyre pressure values in their car manual.

They are also often printed on the inside of your fuel cap and inside the driver’s door.
