Driving test cancelled: When will driving test centres reopen?

The government has put the UK in lockdown to prevent the spread of the coronavirus and only essential travel is permitted. However, many have been wondering when they will be able to sit their driving tests.

When will driving test centres reopen?

Driving tests are not deemed essential tasks under the current government guidelines.

As a result, test centres across the UK have been closed.

Last month, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) said driving tests will be suspended for up to three months.

Theory tests have also been suspended until at least April 20.

However, emergency tests are available to critical workers in the coronavirus response.

Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps, said of the move: “Since it’s impossible to maintain social distancing over a prolonged period we have suspended driver testing for the next three months in a further move to protect the public in our national battle against COVID19.

“It is vital that those who need a test can get one so DVSA is offering tests to those who have a critical need, such as the NHS and drivers delivering goods across the UK.”

  • Driving lessons cancelled: Are driving lessons allowed in lockdown?

Theory tests have been cancelled automatically and refund will be issued.

However, you can still book, change or cancel theory tests for April 21 onwards.

As for driving tests, those who already had a test booked will get an email informing them that their test has been changed.

The email will include the new date and time of the driving test.

You can also cancel your pre-booked driving test and get a full refund by emailing [email protected].

The email should include your full name and two of the following pieces of information: driving licence number, theory test pass certificate number or driving test booking reference.

The DVSA said: “If you have not booked a driving test, you’ll be unable to do so at the moment.

“When driving tests start again, priority will be given to people who had their test cancelled.

“This means you will have to wait longer than usual.”

Critical workers can apply for an emergency theory test by emailing [email protected], while emergency driving tests can be arranged by emailing [email protected].

This applies to people working in health and social care, education and childcare, key public services, local and national government, food and other necessary goods, public safety and national security, transport and utilities, communication and financial services.
