Private number plates are big business and can attract huge price tags. Motorists keen on owning a luxury and unique number plate will fork out huge sums of money to secure a cool or quirky registration. The most expensive number plate official sold in the UK was ’25 0’ which was bought in 2014 by a Ferrari dealer for £518,000. Other pricey registrations that have been sold previously are ‘F1’ for £440,000 and ’S1’ for £404,000.
Short number plates or those which spell a specific word or phrase usually attract the biggest fees.
One taxi driver picked up two number plates for over £130,000, which could not be more perfect for his job.
Capital Cars boss Stephen Rose bought the TAX1 and TAX15 number plates for £92,000 and £38,000 respectively.
These number plates also now adorn the fleet’s electric Tesla cars.
“We see it as a long-term investment,” said Elaine Lamb of Gorgie-based Capital Cars.
“People are definitely talking about it and it’s great for business.”
“It’s a bit tongue in cheek as well because we’re a private hire firm rather than taxis,” joked Elaine.
Customers can request the Teslas if they would prefer them and have reportedly been a hit with customers.
“They’re really good,” said Elaine.
“I’m a real petrol-head but even I’m a convert.
“They’ve got a range of 250 miles so we’ll be doing tours in them.”
