Dyson Made A Fully Working Prototype Of Its Excellent Electric SUV

Such a shame this project was stopped so close to being completed, but maybe it’s not quite dead yet.

Dyson just published an extensive press release full of new information, photos and videos on its failed electric vehicle project. Or maybe it’s too early to sing its swan song because said press release appears to be an appeal to possible investors to fund the project, since it is portrayed as being in its final stretch of development and hugely promising.

As explained in this article, the Dyson electric SUV didn’t make it to market because it was probably designed to run on solid state batteries, with the belief that they would become available by the time it was ready. And since they weren’t and using current lithium-ion cells would have made the vehicle cost in excess of £150,000, thus making it hard to sell.

Cost aside, the sheer number of cells needed to achieve 150 kWh capacity (no fewer than 8,500 of them) resulted in a curb weight of 2.6 tons. With sold state batteries, this would drop dramatically and aid in everything from handling to efficiency and range.
