According to the AA, both petrol and diesel averages increased by up to half a penny yesterday. Data from the AA shows average petrol costs were up to 136.78p on Thursday, up from 136.50p on Tuesday.

Diesel prices were also up to 139.10p per litre in an increase from 138.78 pence on Tuesday.

The AA warns this is the first time diesel prices have been above 139p a litre since October 2013.

The increase means petrol prices are up by over one penny per litre since the crisis began last week.

Diesel costs are now also up by over 1.50p per litre since the crisis began last week.

The increase means average diesel prices have risen by up to 2.5 pence since the start of October.

The AA also warns the sudden rise follows a surge in wholesale prices.

They are up from 45p per litre at the start of September to nearly 52.5p per litre yesterday.

Just days ago, FairFuelUK told Express.co.uk that their supporters had identified price rises across the UK.

They warned prices were up between 5p and 10p in some areas and warned many retailers were profiteering from the crisis.

The AA also confirmed price rises “followed the serial pattern” whenever there was panic buying.

They said this was usually to deter drivers from topping up their tanks unnecessarily.

They warned some retailers also increased costs in a bid to recover some of the lost income from drivers buying fuel instead of shopping.
