This is the Daihatsu Sigra, which is making its public show debut at GIIAS 2016 alongside its Toyota Calya twin sister, which we showed you in full earlier. Like the Xenia to the Avanza, the Sigra is identical to the Calya save for a unique face and D badges. It’s also positioned slightly lower than the Toyota, and comes with a 1.0L engine option unique to it.
The 1.0 litre engine in question is the 1KR-VE, which recently made its debut in the Perodua Bezza. The three-cylinder DOHC motor is an improved version of the 1KR-DE engine from the Perodua Axia.
Besides the addition of (single) VVT-i, Toyota/Daihatsu increased the compression ratio (11.0:1 to 11.5:1), added a high-tumble intake port, a longer intake manifold and a micro spray injector. Lastly, the valve lifters have been finely finished to reduce surface roughness by as much as 90%. All these measures combine to improve efficiency. As per the Bezza, the engine makes 67 hp and 91 Nm here.
The 1.0L mill is exclusively paired to a five-speed manual gearbox in the D and M grades. The X and R trim levels are powered by the same 1.2L Dual VVT-i engine found in the Calya. The 3NR-VE four-cylinder DOHC unit – a smaller version of the 1.3L NR engine in the Bezza (Indonesian Low Cost Green Car engine cap is 1.2L) – makes 88 PS at 6,000 rpm and 108 Nm of torque at 4,200 rpm. 1.2L buyers get to choose between the stick shift and a four-speed automatic.
Everything else is unchanged, which means MacPherson struts and ventilated disc brakes in front, and a torsion beam with drum brakes at the back. Electric power steering and 14-inch wheels (175/65 tyres) complete the package. The latter is made of steel on the M and X grades and alloy on the top R. The base D comes with 13-inch steel wheels and 155/80 rubber. The Toyota sports 14-inch two-tone alloys across the board.
It’s the same inside, except for a black and silver colour scheme as opposed to black-brown in the Calya. The Sigra is also available in six colours, with the Nebula Blue Metallic hue seen here unique to it. The Calya, which doesn’t come in this blue, gets Orange Metallic as its exclusive colour. The Daihatsu Sigra is priced from 106.6 juta rupiah (RM32,550) to 147.35 juta rupiah (RM44,993).
