In a rather surprising announcement, Polyphony Digital has revealed that there’s a new Gran Turismo Sport content update coming this month. When the update arrives on November 13, it’ll bring one of 2020’s most interesting cars: the Toyota GR Yaris.
It’s been quite a while since the last GT Sport update, and even longer since the last content update. We’ve seen a couple of small patches across the summer, but you’d have to go back to May, and the Mazda RX-Vision GT3, to find the most recent new content. Indeed there’s only been five new cars added this year and no new tracks since Laguna Seca last December.
That all tallies with comments made in February by Kazunori Yamauchi. The Gran Turismo creator said that GT Sport‘s updates would become “modest in frequency and volume“, and fans could be forgiven for thinking that support had ended.
Today’s announcement reveals otherwise, as a new car will head to the game for the first time in just under six months. Toyota revealed the GR Yaris earlier this year, and it’s fair to say it’s a pretty interesting little car. It serves as the homologation model for Toyota’s World Rally Car, and it’s something of a beast.
The GR Yaris is barely related to its regular Yaris sibling. Toyota employs extensive use of carbon composites and aluminum in the body shell, which features a massive 3.5-inch cut to the roof line. That allows Toyota, if it produces at least 2,500 examples of the car, to use the body as the basis of a WRC machine.
Underneath the GR Yaris is a hybrid chassis, with the front from the Yaris but the rear from the C-HR. This allows for the four-wheel drive system, which employs two Torsen differentials and a center coupling to allow for up to 100% torque distribution to the front or to the rear. Power comes from a 257hp, 1.6-liter, three-cylinder engine.
When the 1.62 update arrives, players will be able to buy the Toyota GR Yaris 1st Edition RZ “High Performance” 2020 for 100,000cr in the game. There will also be a special online Time Trial for the GR Yaris, set at the Sardegna Windmills rally circuit, running for a month to December 13.
As yet there’s no word on any of the other cars we were expecting for GT Sport in 2020: a Porsche Vision GT; the Porsche 917 Living Legend; and the Lamborghini Lambo V12 Vision GT. However, this new update does prove that support for GT Sport hasn’t quite finished yet…
