This functioning Batmobile replica uses a turbine engine for power and, yes, is fully functional. It’s also incredibly expensive.
Obviously, this faithful Batmobile re-creation isn’t from the latest films, but rather the 1989 blockbuster directed by Tim Burton. While this Batmobile doesn’t have a film pedigree, it does have something the ones featured in the film don’t: a turbine engine.
Yeah, that’s right, there’s a turbine engine powering this Batmobile replica. As wild as that sounds, it gets even better: It runs and drives. According to the listing, it’s officially powered by a military surplus turboshaft engine that spins to 20,000 rpm. The seller says that the turbine engine is good for about 400 hp, which is more than enough to roll this on and off a trailer. Power goes through a semiautomatic four-speed transmission to the rear wheels. The car rides on an air suspension.
The seller says it weighs about as much as a Corvette—but failed to mention which generation. Regardless, considering the length, being in the same ballpark as the heaviest ’Vette is still good.
The proper Batman accouterment is also found on this Batmobile. There is a replica Browning .30-caliber machine gun and flamethrower. The machine gun apparently fires blanks, and the flamethrower lacks an actuator, igniter or nozzle. That said, it is plumbed and could be made functional, if you saw fit.
Surprisingly, this Batmobile is titled, registered and ready for the road. It’s being sold as-is but is said to run and drive. Operating the car is about the same as any non-Batmobile, with the only major difference being the turbine engine.
There is one rub: It’s listed for $680K. Or, if you want to see all the zeros: $680,000. That’s a lot of money, but it might be worth it for the most devoted Batman fans. You can check out more images and the listing right here.
