If we’re being 100 percent objective and reasonable, there is absolutely no reason to follow through on the incredibly dumb idea of building a tandem drift car, with two drivers, two drivetrains, two car bodies, and two steering systems. And yet we’re very glad that the German hosts of YouTube channel Candy Machine persevered anyway, because the result is something so bonkers that we can’t help but love it.
The guys started with two beat-up E46s—one right-hand drive, one left-hand drive—which they welded together into something that, by BMW chassis code math, becomes one massive E92. The two straight sixes remain intact as does most of the drivetrain and interior, making this a 12-cylinder, 12-speed, 10-passenger drift car. And drift it does.
Despite two separate control systems—and the four inner wheels being lopped off—the E46-squared is still a perfectly capable drift car. The hosts demonstrate this on a massive skidpad, where the double-weight, 700-hp, welded-diff drift missile eviscerates its tires. They synchronize gear changes, mimic each other’s inputs, and make the extra-wide-body Bimmer slide like there’s only one driver.
If you’re interested in the build, this is episode three of Candy Machine‘s series on the “Ultimate Tandem Machine.” Part 1 and Part 2 do a good job showing what it took to weld the two cars together, including how the inner suspension and brakes were tucked away after the inside wheels were removed. There’s not much of a practical use for the end result, but it’s a hilarious build to watch.
