Are you always too busy to collect your online purchases because you’re hardly at home or the office? Well, in the United States at least, Honda and its luxury offshoot Acura have teamed up with Amazon to offer the Key by Amazon in-car delivery service, so that those packages can be sent straight to your vehicle.
An extension of the brands’ connected car services, HondaLink Remote Services and AcuraLink, it grants delivery agents limited access to customers’ cars. Users making purchases at Amazon.com can select the “In-Car” delivery option at checkout, and on the day of delivery they will be given a four-hour delivery window, during which they are required to park their car within two blocks of the selected address.
They will also be notified when the delivery driver is headed to their vehicle, and once Amazon determines the car is within range, the driver will locate the car using GPS. Upon finding it, the driver will scan the package and send a request to the owner to unlock it, and once the package is placed inside they will send another request to lock the car again. The owner will then be notified that the delivery is completed.
The service is available for owners of selected Honda Accord, Insight, Passport, Pilot and Odyssey models, along with the 2019 and 2020 Acura RDX. They must have an active subscription to HondaLink Remote Package or AcuraLink, on top of being an Amazon Prime member. For a limited time, customers placing their first in-car delivery order will receive a US$10 (RM40) Amazon gift card.
It’s not the first time a carmaker has allowed in-car deliveries – Volvo introduced a similar service in Sweden back in 2015. What do you think – would you use such a service if it was offered here, or do you think it’s just a disaster waiting to happen? Sound off in the comments after the jump.
