Honda's Retro Race Car Concept Is Already Our Favorite Thing From the Tokyo Auto Show

The Tokyo Auto Salon kicks off on January 11th, but we’ve already picked out our show favorite: The Honda Modulo Neo Classic Racer, a track car concept with delightful retro flair. Just look at that li’l guy!

Honda

This concept car builds off the S660 Neo Classic, which itself started out as a Tokyo Auto Show concept and has now been released as a body kit for the S660, Honda’s mid-engine Kei-class roadster. With a front fascia that mimics taped-off headlights, bolt-on fender flares, and a serious-looking wheel-and-tire package, this tiny racer looks fantastic.

Honda

It’s just a concept for now, and Honda hasn’t specified whether this show car received any performance upgrades to back up the look—the regular S660 makes just 63 horses and 77 lb-ft from a 658-cc inline three-cylinder. But it weighs just 1850 lbs and has a proper six-speed manual, so we can only assume this tiny two-seater is a hoot to drive.

Even if Honda decides to put the Neo Classic Racer into production, it’s almost guaranteed that we’ll never get one in the US—Kei cars are about as ill-suited to our driving environment as a vehicle can be. Still, we hope someone in Honda decides to give this thing the green light. The world needs more tiny race cars.
