Most motorists will have been in a situation where their car’s fuel light turns on. Whether you forgot to fill up or were just waiting until the last minute or got caught short on the road, it is a scenario the majority of motorists will be able to relate to. The light will turn on to indicate to the driver to top up immediately to avoid breaking down. Of course, the car doesn’t stop working when the fuel light hits E or 0 for empty but drivers shouldn’t delay between top-ups.
However, how far a car will go before you need to top it up again varies between the carmaker and the individual model.
New research from Compare The Market asked motorists how far they believed they could go on the empty light before the car would run out of fuel.
On average, once the fuel warning light has lit up and 37 per cent think it’s less than 20 miles, found the research.
The car insurer’s research actually found that the majority of models could travel at least double that.
It calculated the average distances which can be driven in 96 of the most popular models from 29 manufacturers once the light comes on.
At the top of the list was the VW Passat which managed an impressive 75 miles followed by the Volvo V40 which can travel up to 70.6 miles and Ford Mondeo which manages 70.02 miles.
Volvo came out on top as the best brand for overall mileage performance averaging 58.83-miles from the fuel light turning on to the engine cutting out.
The worst rated cars on the list were the BMW M3 which managed 31.99 miles, the Kia Picanto (32.14 miles) and Fiat 500 (37.14 miles).
Mini was found to be the worst performing brand covering just 37.52 miles before running out of fuel.
However, now your car specifically performs is based on a number of other facto such as the speed you travel, what type of roads you’re on and your driving style.
CompareTheMarket.com calculated the range of each vehicle by assuming that the car’s fuel light comes on at 10 per cent capacity, then comparing the manufacturer’s data on the fuel tank nice to real-world fuel economy which was submitted by vehicle owners.
Drivers could be penalised for running out of fuel as it could be classed as careless driving or driving without due care and attention.
