Infiniti has announced that it will be ceasing all operations in western Europe in 2020, with the exit from that market planned to take place early next year. The withdrawal is part of the automaker’s global restructuring plan to focus on pushing the brand in North America and China. The automaker added that the move will have no impact on ongoing operations in eastern Europe.
The company said that it will end production of the Q30 and QX30 at its UK plant sometime in the middle of this year. The Sunderland facility builds both vehicles for the global market, and is the only Infiniti plant to do so, which effectively means that both models will be discontinued.
It said it will work with its retailers to conclude end of franchise agreements and have its retail operations in these countries remain operational until a tailored transition plan is put in place for after-sales services – including vehicle servicing, maintenance and warranty repairs – to continue smoothly.
Infiniti said its restructuring plan will see electrification entering its model portfolio from 2021 and diesel being dropped from the line-up. Future plans will see the brand placing a stronger focus on its SUV lineup in the US and introduce five new models in China over the next five years. The company also said it is looking to improve quality of sales and residual value and realise more synergies with Nissan.
