Johor plans to build a new bridge to Singapore in 2019

According to The Straits Times, the Johor state government has identified a few projects that will be implemented in 2019, and this includes a new bridge linking Johor Bahru and Singapore.

In the report, Johor chief minister Osman Sapian said construction of the bridge would begin as soon as all parties are in agreement on how to deal with the congestion at the existing Johor-Singapore Causeway and Malaysia-Singapore Second Link.

“The bridge could be crooked or straight, but it would be a reality,” said Osman, who was referring to a proposal made in 2003, whereby the Malaysian side of the Causeway would be replaced with an S-shaped, six-lane highway that would also allow seafaring vessels to pass underneath.

However, the idea, which was first mooted by then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, never came to fruition after all these years. The curious design of the bridge would also allow stagnant water to flow and improve the marine environment in the Johor Strait.

Osman stated that reviving the “crooked bridge” would help deal with congestion affecting both entry points, which gets worse during holidays. He added that while the construction of the bridge could take place in 2019, the design of the bridge has yet to be finalised.
