Volvo reportedly showed a group of dealers its plans for the next few years, offering more juicy details on the upcoming Volvo XC90 SUV replacement and teasing four other all-new, all-electric models including a sedan, a compact, and two more wagon-styled “activity vehicles.” With so much new product on the horizon, it’s no wonder some dealers reportedly leaked the Volvo presentation to Automotive News.
Volvo Embla Leads Four More New BEVs
Auto News reports it obtained the key details of a Volvo retailer conference in Miami, Florida, last week that outlined the automaker’s product roadmap for the next few years, confirming a new full-size crossover with three rows of seating will be the next new vehicle to be revealed early next year, which we believe will be called the Embla.
Previously, Volvo CEO Håkan Samuelsson confirmed to MotorTrend that the company’s new flagship model “will have a name, more like a child,” and the brand wants to evoke its Swedish and Norse mythological roots. The rumored new “Embla” name comes from trademark paperwork filed by Volvo. Embla is the companion of Askr in a similar story to that of the biblical Adam and Eve.
Once on sale, Volvo is anticipating up to 20,000 sales of the Embla per year. It was again confirmed in the Volvo presentation that the Embla will borrow design cues from the recent Volvo Recharge concept car, which will also influence the look of the rest of the new EV lineup too. We’ve gone through the trouble of rendering what we believe the new Embla will look like for you already.
Codename V546
After the launch of the new full-size Embla (we can’t stop saying “Embla”), the product map projects five more all-new BEVs, as well as current model updates. There will be a new crossover positioned below the Embla, but bigger than the current XC60. This new upcoming crossover is codenamed V546, and Volvo anticipates selling over 100,000 units between the U.S. and China when it launches sometime in 2025.
An EV Sedan + New Volvo C30?
An all-electric sedan is included in the list of upcoming BEVs too, but was reportedly only briefly mentioned at the dealer meeting. It’s plausible that this could be some sort of all-electric S60 sedan replacement, but it could also be a model based on the upcoming Polestar 5 architecture that’s based on the Precept concept.
One of the all-new BEVs will be positioned below the current XC40 and C40 Recharge compact crossovers in size, suggesting the automaker could be making some sort of callback to its old C30 hatchback with a new compact model. What actual form this model takes, whether a hatchback, another crossover, or something else, is still unclear. Something that small may seem destined for Europe, but we figure if it was shown to North and South American dealer groups, then it’s likely due to be sold over here, as well.
Two New (Cross) Wagons
Volvo’s product plan reportedly maps two new additional wagon-styled BEVs, as well. Automotive News says these wagon models were specifically described as “activity vehicles.” Volvo ended sale of all its standard wagon models in the U.S., so we anticipate the new wagons will be more like the “Cross Country” models that have a slight lift and more body protection from the elements. Volvo currently has the V60 CC and V90 CC still on sale in the U.S., so these could just be replacements for those two models.
Updated XC60, S90 and XC90 Coming Soon
The current XC60 will be also be updated with a new all-electric replacement. Additionally, the current Volvo S90 and XC90 plug-in hybrid models will get an updated redesign that was already previewed to dealers.
Auto News reports these cars will take full advantage of the optimized, longer EV wheelbases, offering more immediate passenger and cargo room and better visibility thanks to a lowered hood line and streamlined roof. The shifting proportions are enough to require a new styling direction for the new models, which will still be an evolution of the current look. While the cars will maintain the “Thor’s Hammer” signature lighting design, expect more cladding and adornments and most of the cues from Volvo’s Recharge concept interpreted into each segment.
Production
Volvo’s reported plans include dramatically ramping up production at its Ridgeville, South Carolina facility as these new models are introduced. Ridgeville currently only produces the S60 sedan at rates far below the factory’s max potential annual output of 150,000 cars.
Volvo’s new BEV models will be produced alongside the upcoming Polestar 3 compact electric crossover, and both are owned by Geely group. As Volvo phases out its combustion-powered offerings, the leaked roadmap shows the factory is anticipated to produce only BEVs in just a few years, and only pure-electric cars by the end of the decade.
